Omega 3 Fish Oil & Weight Loss

Over the years, I’ve learned there are fat burning foods which can actually increase the number of fat calories my body burns each day! I like the sound of that, don’t you?

Although fat burning foods are helpful for anyone who wants to lose weight and keep it off for good, they’re vital for those people who find it hard to lose weight.  These fat burning foods are generally low in calories and include: walnuts, salmon, trout, sardines, raw nuts, beans, macadamia nuts, pine nuts and avocadoes.  Many of these foods are high in omega 3 and omega 6.  One of the easiest ways to get this into your daily regimen is with a high quality omega supplement.  I had always heard that omegas were good for heart health, breast health and inflammation, but didn’t know they helped with weight!

Here’s what I learned about Omega 3 fish oil and weight loss

A recent study was published in the international journal of obesity.  Researchers wanted to find out if supplementing the diet with omega 3 fish oil (good fat) would increase the number of fat calories burned in a single day. The two groups were fed exactly the same diet except one group was fed 6 grams of fat in the form of butter, olive oil, sunflower oil and peanut oil.  The other group was given 6 grams of omega 3 fish oil.  The fish oil group was given 8 capsules per day, 2 in the morning, 3 at lunch and 3 in the evening.  The total daily intake of omega 3 long chain fatty acids was 1.8 grams.

Results after 3 weeks were as follows:

The group with fish oil lost 2 lbs body fat and burned 1775 calories per day.

The group without fish oil lost 0.7 lbs of fat, burning 1710 calories per day.

These results show that the group supplementing with fish oil burned about 1.1 milligrams of fat per kilo per minute.  This is roughly 26% higher than the group without fish oil.

So, how do the omegas have such a powerful effect on fat metabolism?

Apparently, it is because the insulin levels were 50% lower when subjects used the fish oil.  Insulin is a hormone that reduces the use of fat for fuel, while also promoting fat storage in the presences of excess calories.  Insulin increases the activity of an enzyme known to promote the storage of fat.  Insulin inhibits the action of hormone sensitive lipase, which is responsible for breaking down stored fat and preparing it for use as energy. Insulin also activates an enzyme which along with fatty acid synthesis, is responsible for converting carbohydrate into fat.

Simply put, high levels of insulin make it less likely that yourS body will use stored fat as a fuel source.  The drop in insulin levels when subjects used the fish oil would have allowed more fat to be used for energy.

How do I get Omegas in my diet?

The ideal way to get any nutrient is to eat a very balanced diet.  In the case of Omega 3 oil this would be in the form of fish. Sadly, due to the pollution levels found in our oceans today, eating large portions of fish every day is not advisable.  The truth is, that there will never be an easy quick-fix method of losing weight which is safe and simple.  However, a little research, does make it clear that there are many small things I can do which add up over time to aid me in maintaining my ideal weight.

How I found a High Quality Full Spectrum Fish Oil.

With a little research I learned that not all fish oil capsules are created equal. When looking for an omega-3 supplement, there are two things to look for…potency and purity. Rusty Ost, pharmacist, noted in an article he wrote on omega supplements, that they regularly had omega-3 products recalled from the drug store because of contamination with lead, mercury and other contaminants found in the diet of the fish. So the source was very important.

I learned it was important to look for an ultra-pure certified pharmaceutical-grade fish oil with low odor and no after-taste. In addition, it should offer full-spectrum potency with a blend of the seven ultra-pure essential fatty acids found in fish.

As I compared various brands, I learned it was important to look not at just the size of the capsule, but the actual amount of EPA and DHA available. It was also critical that the manufacturer used a low temperature, triple molecular distillation and purification process that concentrated natural beneficial omega 3 fatty acids and removed any  impurities such as heavy metals lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, dioxins and PCBs.
