Fruits

Delight in the sweetness that
nature has to offer!

Fruits are nature’s sweet delicacies and they are loaded with nutrients! While we encourage you to buy organic, we know that isn’t always possible. When you can’t buy organic fruits, use a good organic produce cleaner. For a list of fruits and vegetables that are most susceptible to pesticides, check out Food News from Environmental Working Group.

  • Apples – Great source of pectin and fiber and they are low on the glycemic index! Buy organic, if possible, because conventional apples are loaded with pesticides.

  • Apricots

  • Banana – Eat in moderation because they are higher on the glycemic index.

  • Blackberries

  • Blueberries – The king of antioxidant fruits!

  • Boysenberries

  • Cantaloupe – Delicious but don’t eat too much – cantaloupe is high on the glycemic index and too much in your diet can have a laxative effect.

  • Casaba melon

  • Cherries – Low on the glycemic index and rich in phytonutrients.

  • Cranberries – Great source of vitamin C but watch out for sugar-laden cranberry sauces and beverages.

  • Crenshaw melon

  • Currants

  • Elderberries

  • Gooseberries

  • Grapefruit – Packed full of vitamin C and low on the glycemic index.

  • Grapes – Eat in moderation and buy organic, if possible, since conventional grapes are high in pesticides.

  • Groundcherries

  • Guava

  • Honeydew Melon – Oh so sweet! Just don’t eat too much. Honeydew is high on the glycemic index and too much in your diet can have a laxative effect.

  • Kiwi

  • Kumquat

  • Lemons – Add a wonderful zing to your recipes and a great support for your liver!

  • Limes

  • Loganberries

  • Mangoes – Add a taste of the tropics to your meals!

  • Nectarines – Another fruit that is susceptible to pesticides, so buy organic if you can.

  • Oranges

  • Papaya

  • Peaches

  • Pears – This “gift of the gods” is high in vitamin C and copper (important antioxidant nutrients). Conventional pears are high on the pesticide list, so buy organic, if possible.

  • Pineapple – Great source of bromelain, an enzyme that helps you digest food more easily.

  • Plums

  • Prunes – Yes, you can get these fresh (sometimes called purple plums)! They are high in fiber and low on the glycemic index.

  • Raspberries – A summer delight, these delicate berries are rich in phytonutrients. If you can’t buy them fresh, check out the organic options in the frozen food section of your grocer—just skip the ones with added sugar or syrup.

  • Strawberries – Loaded with vitamin C. Buy organic, if possible, because conventional strawberries are high on the pesticide list.

  • Watermelon – Yes, it is high on the glycemic index but don’t skip this powerful source of antioxidants altogether! Some studies have found that watermelon may counteract the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma and colon cancer.
